8 pages discussing proposals to “decriminalize” border crossings by Trump supporters who seem to know nothing about anything. If you truly care about this issue, the facts are readily available. The rest of you are just nutty racists who enjoy kidnapping brown children and keeping them in cages. https://www.vox.com/2019/6/26/18760665/1325-immigration-castro-democratic-debate
+1. This thread is exhibit A in why people think Trump supporters are low-information.
Here's the main point from Vox:
Under that plan, an immigrant crossing into the US without papers, whether he was seeking asylum in the US or coming for some other reason, would not be committing a federal crime. If caught by Border Patrol agents, she’d be detained for a brief amount of time, but if she didn’t raise any red flags, she’d be released into the US (with a case management system to check up on her whereabouts) pending an immigration hearing. If she didn’t qualify for some form of legal status like asylum, she’d still ultimately be ordered deported from the US.
If it's a fed crime, people are locked up and the courts are backlogged. If it's decriminalized, more people will enter (Who's going to argue against THIS point?), BP will have to still process them - looking for "red flags" - and then they're released and given an immigration hearing to determine whether they stay or go. Basically, if BP is overwhelmed now, this measure won't lessen their load. still not a better option - in fact, a slippery slope
