Any Ward 4 councilmembers who doesn't fight to keep Shepherd in Deal/Wilson will lose support in SP, and consequently lose their seat. Way too much political power in SP to cross.
Many parents in SP don't even send their kids to Wilson (they go to JPDS and other privates). Shepherd is a small school, and Todd or anybody else would care more about Lafayette parents, than Shepherd parents. New North needs a strong cohort. SP to New North/Coolidge. -Ward 4 mother.
Only if Lafayette goes too! I also need a path out if things do not work out at Coolidge. The scores are just terrible..worse than Ballou! It makes me think they don’t have any classroom management.
I live in Takoma. My kids do not attend Coolidge. But the primary problem isn't classroom management based on what is shared on our neighborhood listserv and in the data released by DCPS. 30% of students are Latino. 28% are ELLs, many arriving in the U.S. less than 5 years ago. 24% of students have disabilities. 71% qualify as at-risk (qualify for TANF and/or food stamps, are homeless, are in foster care). It is a high-needs population. Perhaps Coolidge isn't serving them well, but these kids are going to struggle anywhere.
