I don't buy the whole backing in is safer thing.  I see people walking through parking spaces all the time. So people backing in still need to worry about that,  And what about the safety to other vehicles?  I'm sure people who back into spaces ding more cars than those who pull in. [/quote]

It's far safer for you and I both if I'm pulling out of a space, and I can SEE people like you coming, driving 35 mph through the parking lot lanes. If I'm backing out, I won't see you until you're almost upon me, and knowing your type, you'll run into me and cause a crash, seeking a settlement.

Pulling OUT of a space negates the opportunity for bad / angry drivers (like you, in case that wasn't already made clear) to crash into me.
