What about the gear? [/quote] H and I flew out to San Fran one year, rented a compact car and drove to Yosemite, Sequoia NP, Kings Canyon, and Joshua Tree, and flew out of LA. We brought our tent and sleeping bags (they fold up really small), plus a bunch of REI freeze dried camping food pouches that you simply add hot water to make dinner. It was wonderful, and pretty cheap. Car camping is fairly easy and you don't have to bring as much stuff, as you can buy groceries along the way. Our favorite park was the Sequoia.
