Nothing will change until we draw boundaries that equalize the demographics across SES from in every school.
Those won't be boundaries in any traditional sense. It would just be a lottery program for school assignments. And it would send parents fleeing to privates and other school systems. No one buys in Vienna so their kids can be bussed to Annandale. Even the Democrats know that.
Let them go if they don't believe in a quality education for all students.
Don't be so dismissive. When the well-to-do lose faith in the public schools they take their children and they move and jobs move with them and then you have a Philadelphia, a Newark, a Detroit and on and on. Look at Houston - no well-off people put their kids in public schools, and they won't pay taxes to fund the schools either. Your objective of a "quality" education for all students is admirable, but completely unhelpful. For starters, what constitutes a "quality" education? Lincoln and Washington got a sufficient education in a one-room schoolhouse. FCPS spends more than $15,000 per year on average per student - note that this is approximately the same as in-state tuition at the flagship state universities. More money doesn't necessarily mean better outcomes. And you've seen with the Meals Tax vote that many citizens are fed-up with tax burdens. It's a huge concern to draw employers to invest in the area and to get employees to move here (and buy your house one day). A well-run, efficient, effective school system will attract employers & employees - by contrast, an expensive, ineffective school system that doesn't serve the ambitions of potentially mobile parents is the start of economic decline. But don't believe me, listen to the Leadership team, the Chamber of Commerce, the Supervisors and Realtors. "Let them go" is an immature reaction to a difficult and important issue.
