Kids "try on" lots of behaviors as a normal part of growing up. This is a fairly new one, certain to alarm the adults within their sphere. I "tried on" dressing and acting like a boy briefly in high school, long before it was popular. I also tried on Jesus freak, armband wearing revolutionary and apathetic intellectual before finally settling for myself. I don't think trans identity should be treated with any meds, etc. before 21.
I think you are conflating issues here. Genderqueer or nonbinary or whatever kids rarely seek out hormonal treatment. They are just experimenting with their gender expression and identity. Trans kids, though? If you wait until 21, you are pretty much screwing them over. By then, puberty will have permanently changed their facial structure, voice, and bodies. For those few kids who really need it, drugs to suppress puberty are probably the best option. It keeps the door open to them changing their mind later, or not.
