I find OP's contentment in line with the mindset of many millenials. She likes what she is doing, is aware that she has a brief window to savor it, and is not particularly troubled by its fragility or shortcomings. My older daughter is roaming Europe for the next 3 months with a group of college students and recent grads. They work as needed, but mostly are happy to have bread and cheese for dinner if it means they can afford to spend a 4 day weekend in Prague. My daughter is becoming conversant in 4 languages and meeting dozens of people from all walks of life. She's had 3 articles published about her experiences. I was too neurotic at her age to do anything but research grad schools and hone my resume.
Spruce up that rec room The boomerang is about to return
She is doings this based on the cumulative effect of consistent family financing. Perhaps she earned seed money living rent free with you or via your subsidy, and/or and is likely debt fre from college. A lower SES millennial is not casually rudderless. This is a rare luxury resulting from 3rd or 4th generation wealth. Like teaching skiing in Telluride or waiting tables in Martha's Vineyard....it's just a little break in the action until she gets her doctorate in French Medieval History.
No family money -- I'm a public school teacher who grew up poor. Dad is an accountant whose father had a 10th grade education. We just emphasized that travel beats stuff and opportunity doesn't knock twice. She won't be able to go to Morocco for a week when she has a spouse, kids, and full-time job. Who wants to live in a group home at 28? 21-22 is the time to book a hostel in a country you know nothing about. She should enjoy it now.
