I do think it's a gimmicky idea from the 22 year old. He's basically campaigning on youth because that's all he's got.
He is also bringing positivity. Not YEARS of disturbing baggage.

It's definitely not a gimmicky idea. Fairfax has had student reps for 20 years I think and Alexandria City most definitely has had them for years. It's kind of shocking that Arlington does not.
Does Fairfax have a student advisory board with reps from each school that the chair meets with monthly? Or do they just have the rep? Maybe different places do things differently?
IDK answer to your question. NP, just want to comment that I think the student advisory board APS has is a much better thing than having a student rep on the SB. More students have a direct voice through the advisory board, more schools are represented. If they want to appoint someone from the advisory board to represent the board at SB meetings, I think that would be a good additional thing to do. That student could "remind" the Board of any points on issues that come up during the meeting, serve as a visible reminder of the students and their positions, make students more visible to the community as well.

I completely support that idea. I think there should be more than one - one from each high school - present at each school board meeting. Maybe it will remind the school board why they are there and that they should you know actually do something about schools.
To me that is just theater. I'm on a working group with a student rep and they never speak.
Now having a teacher as a school board member, that I can get on board with.
I wouldn't write off ALL student reps based on your experience with one.
I support both a teacher and a student rep.
I would support a teacher representative as well. I think that would be a good addition - maybe one elementary, one middle, and one high school teacher.
Its an inherent conflict of interest, you can't negotiate your own contract.

Advocacy update: Several APE members met with Diane Kresh, the head librarian, this morning as follow-on to APE’s letter to the County Board asking for more resources and programming from the Libraries and DPR to address the literacy and mental health crises.
We had a FANTASTIC meeting with Diane and another librarian. Arlington VA Public Library has a lot of great ideas for teen and youth programming and spaces, and it was a productive brainstorming session.
APE strongly advocated for a reading tutoring program and the librarians were very receptive. APE will continue to advocate for County resources to support our kids and to close the literacy gap in this County.

This is a good idea.
Not getting this from the parents' rights APE candidate.
Dp. I think Miranda had this idea last time she ran.

Parents rights vs students rights?
