And the more interesting question is who posting on this thread doesn't have a family member that came here at some point in time as an immigrant? More importantly, first generation immigrants commit violent crimes at a much lower rate than other Americans. I
My parents are immigrants. They came legally, paid their fees and waited in line, and became citizens 14 years after they moved here. I could never have a problem with immigration - it's the direct reason I'm here. I'm a Democrat and think that the hysteria surrounding undocumented immigration is completely overblown and I don't support a wall or anything. But there's a very clear distinction between legal and illegal immigration. I think you can absolutely support one and not support the other.
In a perfect world I support legal immigration. In a realistic world, I can see how more pressing concerns for immediate safety of life and health might make legal immigration not an option for some people.
I feel bad for those people. I do not think that means we should invite them here. I think we should help them through foreign and development aid, help broker deals for them to go to other countries (sort of like the EU/Turkey deal, though that one is definitely imperfect), and/or encourage them to move to safer areas within their own country. I think the U.S. government is morally obligated to help its own citizens and to some extent its legal immigrants (who it's accepted/invited here) first. There are always gong to be people fleeing poverty and war and violence, but we can't bring them all here, and it doesn't entitle them to live here without going through the process. And if they're rejected, there are about 190 other countries to choose from.
+1
