Yes, because he knows they won't move it.  Or maybe it's to prove his power that he can force the bipartisan commission to move the debate and blame them if they don't. But also realize this - the last day of baseball season is October 2, so no matter when they schedule the debate, there is a good chance of playoff game.  Depending how post-season goes, this would have given Trump an excuse to move the date at the last minute.  Jewish Holidays also occur in October this year, so they tried to avoid those as well, and if they hadn't it would give Trump another excuse to move the date.  Columbus day is October 10, so another thing to avoid, or not avoid, depending on Trump's whim.
