When my now fourth grader was in pre k, he came home and said that a girl in his class has two dads. It is common practice at this school for kids to bring in their family photos to keep in their cubbies. Each student had a chance to discuss their photo and she said hers was of her and her to dads. My husband and I used this as an opportunity to discuss all kinds of family structures and let him know that what's important is you have someone who loves and cares for you and believes in you no matter what. Fast forward a few years..he knows at least 4-5 other kids with same gender parents. Simple, clear, and honest explanations are best at this age.
Exactly. DS had a two-mom family in his preschool class. We used this opportunity to talk about how sometimes, kids have two moms or two dads. I am grateful that we had the opportunity to have this discussion. However, I wouldn't be particularly thrilled if their teachers had led this discussion. I support and voted for gay marriage btw. When looking at schools, we knew GDS wasn't the right fit for our family.
How did you vote for it? It's all been in the courts.
I guess you missed that whole Maryland, November 2012 historic thing...
