At the risk of derailing a thread that violated Godwin's Law 4 pages ago, the Catholic Church teaches certain things and, as an organization, professes certain beliefs and requires that it's adherents conform to those beliefs.

You don't have to share those beliefs (although your priest, bishop, archbishop and the Pope might disagree). You can be as much of a cafeteria Catholic as you want. But, when you say, "I'm Catholic," people assume that you hold the beliefs professed by the Catholic Church. If you said, "I'm sorta Catholic," or "I'm a C&E Catholic," or even, "I'm a lapsed Catholic," then people are less likely to make assumptions about your beliefs. But if you just stand up and say, "I'm Catholic," then you get the baggage that comes along with claiming allegiance.

It's not just true of Catholics. It's true of every group that expresses dogma - Republicans, Democrats, Libertarians, Baptists, Mormons, etc.

People like PP that send their kids to catholic schools for the daily teachings of their cult are not lapsed Catholics.

Ok, I am a very lapsed Catholic (haven't been to mass or any other sacrament in over 6 years) who went to Catholic school all my life. Not all Catholic schools teach hate - the good ones teach you "this is what the church says, it's your choice to believe or not". I am a bleeding heart, Sanders voting liberal and have been since I came out of the womb. There are many things I have always disagreed with what the church said, and I told my teachers.B ut overall I took away lessons of compassion and tolerance, neither of which you are showing.

I guess what I'm saying is don't call it a cult and stop belittling it because it is not your faith or your beliefs - you're being just as close-minded and narrow as you accuse all Catholics of being.

And the fact that you spoon-feed the same religion to your own kids and make your "family choices" for them is worse. Do you really believe Adam and Eve started the human race? Do you truly believe someone was dead for 3 days, came back to life, pushed a rock out of the way and was the savior? No wonder why you blindly follow loving someone of the same sex is such a big sin. If someone preached it or wrote it, it MUST be true.

Religions were formed for power and land. Nothing more. Evolution is the start of mankind. And no one gets pregnant without having sex or comes back to life. And anyone can choose to love anyone they want. It doesn't have to be endorsed by you or a made-up religion. This country isn't blindly following a fictitious book anymore. It allows religious freedom but it doesn't follow one. Same sex couples are to be treated the same. It is a civic duty of the US. Catholicism has been on a sharp decline and is now below 20% of all Americans. Everyone is fed up with your bigotry behind a "nice religion." So go ahead and not "endorse" anything you want. Exactly. DS had a two-mom family in his preschool class. We used this opportunity to talk about how sometimes, kids have two moms or two dads. I am grateful that we had the opportunity to have this discussion. However, I wouldn't be particularly thrilled if their teachers had led this discussion. I support and voted for gay marriage btw.

When looking at schools, we knew GDS wasn't the right fit for our family.

How did you vote for it? It's all been in the courts.

You don't have to share those beliefs (although your priest, bishop, archbishop and the Pope might disagree). You can be as much of a cafeteria Catholic as you want. But, when you say, "I'm Catholic," people assume that you hold the beliefs professed by the Catholic Church. If you said, "I'm sorta Catholic," or "I'm a C&E Catholic," or even, "I'm a lapsed Catholic," then people are less likely to make assumptions about your beliefs. But if you just stand up and say, "I'm Catholic," then you get the baggage that comes along with claiming allegiance.

It's not just true of Catholics. It's true of every group that expresses dogma - Republicans, Democrats, Libertarians, Baptists, Mormons, etc.

People like PP that send their kids to catholic schools for the daily teachings of their cult are not lapsed Catholics.

Ok, I am a very lapsed Catholic (haven't been to mass or any other sacrament in over 6 years) who went to Catholic school all my life. Not all Catholic schools teach hate - the good ones teach you "this is what the church says, it's your choice to believe or not". I am a bleeding heart, Sanders voting liberal and have been since I came out of the womb. There are many things I have always disagreed with what the church said, and I told my teachers.B ut overall I took away lessons of compassion and tolerance, neither of which you are showing.

I guess what I'm saying is don't call it a cult and stop belittling it because it is not your faith or your beliefs - you're being just as close-minded and narrow as you accuse all Catholics of being.

So you are a lapsed catholic who doesn't believe in their teachings but believes in compassion and tolerance? You do realize you do not need to follow and pay for a religion to have compassion? That is something you were born with and I have seen many atheists with more compassion than the most religious of human beings. Denying someone to sit in your business or hand a marriage certificate because you are catholic and using religion as your reason - is not tolerance. Catholics are not compassionate or tolerant of the LGBT community.

Of course Catholics do not think that. They might say it to you but they truly believe their religion is the only good. Oblivious to how they look from the outside. It is no different than Scientology. The believers believe. Everyone else thinks they are nuts.
