At the risk of derailing a thread that violated Godwin's Law 4 pages ago, the Catholic Church teaches certain things and, as an organization, professes certain beliefs and requires that it's adherents conform to those beliefs.

You don't have to share those beliefs (although your priest, bishop, archbishop and the Pope might disagree). You can be as much of a cafeteria Catholic as you want. But, when you say, "I'm Catholic," people assume that you hold the beliefs professed by the Catholic Church. If you said, "I'm sorta Catholic," or "I'm a C&E Catholic," or even, "I'm a lapsed Catholic," then people are less likely to make assumptions about your beliefs. But if you just stand up and say, "I'm Catholic," then you get the baggage that comes along with claiming allegiance.

It's not just true of Catholics. It's true of every group that expresses dogma - Republicans, Democrats, Libertarians, Baptists, Mormons, etc.

Ok, I am a very lapsed Catholic (haven't been to mass or any other sacrament in over 6 years) who went to Catholic school all my life. Not all Catholic schools teach hate - the good ones teach you "this is what the church says, it's your choice to believe or not". I am a bleeding heart, Sanders voting liberal and have been since I came out of the womb. There are many things I have always disagreed with what the church said, and I told my teachers.B ut overall I took away lessons of compassion and tolerance, neither of which you are showing.

Denying someone to sit in your business or hand a marriage certificate because you are catholic and using religion as your reason - is not tolerance. It's amazing the assumptions people make about Catholics.  Just because my church does not believe in same sex marriage does not mean I think you should not be able to do that in your church, or civilly.  I may believe it is a sin, but it doesn't mean I want to deny you your right to do it.  I believe abortion is gravely wrong, but I don't want to take away your right to have one.  And so on.  The progressive approach seems to be that it is not enough to just tolerate behavoir, but we must endorse it.  Little by little, the religious beliefs that happened to find their way into our laws is being eliminated by society.  That's fine if that's what we want to do civilly, but it won't change my religious beliefs.  [/quote]
