It is not illegal, but it is not neighborly. Neighbors park their cars in front of our our house ALL THE TIME. Almost 5 cars can fit in front of our home but we almost never get to park there as there is no room left. It's Rude, especially because we have kids. It's not fun we we have a car load groceries. Being neighborly would mean leaving, at least, The spot directly in front of my front steps empty. If you want toive in an urban area, having a modicum of common courtesy is required to keep relations positive. Also, it is poorr form to let your neighbors clear a space of snow the take that space when it is obvious that another has done the work.
You really need a lesson on courtesy, which is about making things easier for others, not for yourself. It is stupid and entitled to think that you get to keep a parking space when you're not in it. Presumably, you're parking somewhere else when you're not at home, and the people visiting your neighborhood might not live there. So why do you get to use two spaces for one car? If everyone respected your "rule" pretty soon there would be nowhere to park, except the place where you were parked when it started snowing. But if you didn't need to move your car you wouldn't have shoveled it out in the first place. If everyone clears out one space, it won't matter who cleared out which space. Sure, sometimes you will wind up shoveling before you leave and again when you come back, but you should feel good for having helped someone. Maybe they will do the same when they get home. Note: I park in my garage, and I've shoveled the entire alley, by myself, to get out, hoping that other people would find it useful.
