the arrest and charges are not extreme. Now, taking their kids away or putting them in foster care might be extreme, but not a major fine or jail time, and maybe some parenting classes.
I've said this before - if it was a low invoke black family, you would advocate for the children to be taken away. So why not here? This is a HUGE lapse in judgement! If this were a critical event (which clearly it wasn't), either you take the kids with you and park them in a stroller and stay briefly or trade time with your spouse going in/out. NO ONE should leave their kids in a locked parked car on a cold night while the parebts go drink! Even in Europe, kids are brought in their strollers to the front of the restaurant, where they can be watched! For the love of God, this was neglect at BESt and the tip of the iceberg if abuse, at best.
No, I would NOT advocate taking their kids away if the family were black or low income. I've actually done child advocacy/guardian ad-liem work, and taking someone's kids away is not something to be done lightly. Also, it is (rightfully) hard to get your kids taken away from you. You get second chances, parenting classes, etc. Now, they might take away the kids and put them in foster care until there can be an emergency hearing, but honestly, that will probably traumatize the kids more.
