Let's see. According to Miriam-Webster, hysteria=behaving or reacting in an extreme way because of fear. Now let's look at some of the things that have been posted here over the last few days, following the announcement of ONE case diagnosed in the US: --Close the borders! --The government is lying to us! --I'm never using another airplane bathroom! --I'm going to quit riding the Metro! --One person (who's temperature was taken before check-in) could infect an entire plane! --Hoardes of West Africans with Ebola are going to start flying to the US! Yeah, you're right. None of those reactions sound extreme at all.
I see. So stating an opinion that you believe is wrong equals hysteria. No one has taken *any* action at all, but you think that stating an opinion (which you then add an exclamation point after), makes a person hysterical. Ok. I think your reaction to opinions you disagree with meets the definition of hysteria that you are applying. The world would be so much better if people could discuss points they disagree with without marginalizing or gaslighting other people. But do it your way.
Nope. Reacting in an extreme way because of fear equals hysteria. That's not my definition, that's the dictionary's definition. Are you really trying to argue that your statement that a single person (who has passed a temperature check) will infect a whole plane isn't an extreme reaction? Do you really think it isn't extreme to advocate closing the borders after one diagnosed case?? Let's stop the sensationalistic fear-mongering and I'll be more than happy to have a reasonable discussion with you.
No, that wasn't me. I'm the person saying that your labeling of people who think we should take action (or even be concerned) as "hysterical" is grossly incorrect. I didn't make the other statements. But I *do* think it's very possible for a person to infect many people on an airplane. Here's all it would take: 1) someone not taking the temperature before the flight. We already know this has happened several times at least, from people who experienced it first hand. If we get unlucky and they miss someone with a fever who has Ebola, then a long flight ensues. Bathroom trips, grossness that generally happens on airplanes, flight attendants pickup up used cups. yeah, several people could be infected on one flight. We already have good reason to suspect people have gotten it from surface contact. Other possibility: person is not sick before the flight and gets sick on the flight. That would be quite unlucky, but certainly not impossible. I do think it's extreme to advocate closing all the borders. I do *not* think it's extreme to advocate closing the borders to people originating from the area where the disease is not controlled. Personally, I disagree with it -- but "wrong" is not the same as "extreme". It's a legitimate policy position worthy of discussion. I think it's extreme to advocate doing nothing and waiting to see if we get lucky. But I wouldn't call that hysterical. I'd call it wrong. The person you gaslighted didn't act in any extreme way. If you think discussion merits the accusation of mental illness, you're a bully.
