I've always wondered why kid here don't wear hats when it's cold outside. You can see kid sledging for hours without having hats.I've yet to figure out why. Maybe they don't get sick or you have really good medicine in case they do.
Because they don't want to. Apparently, they don't feel cold, because if they did, they would wear the hat. Not wearing a hat doesn't cause illness. Bacteria and viruses cause illness.
Stop parroting information without actually understanding it. Bacteria and viruses are more likely to attack a weakened immune system, which happens when the body has to fight to stay warm. Exposure to cold increases the risk of developing upper and lower respiratory tract infections and dying from them. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17705968 OP, I'm with you.
But a weakened immune system doesn't happen from having the head exposed to 37 degrees for 2 minutes while walking to/from a store. And a weakened immune system can also happen from being overheated.
Please post the resource showing that overheating increases likelihood of catching colds/ respiratory infections, and worsens the severity of the illness. Babies are too young to link the act of taking off clothing with the feeling of getting cold, so if you're waiting for them to learn that lesson, you might have to wait another year, at least.
Let's see... there's a wealth of information. Overdressing a child can cause heat illnesses. Depending on how much a child is over dressed and how long depends on the severity of the heat illness. Heat illnesses, such as heat stroke, are obviously bad, and weakens the child, making them susceptible to other illnesses. http://www.webmd.com/first-aid/tc/heat-related-illnesses-topic-overview http://kidshealth.org/parent/firstaid_safe/emergencies/heat.html# http://www.newborncare101.com/newborn-tips.html http://www.bubbalicious.co.uk/blog/safe-baby-care/winter-worries-dont-overdress-your-baby/ http://babytraveltalk.wordpress.com/2008/11/07/health-experts-warn-of-serious-problems-with-overdressing/ As far a the parent being bundles up but not the child, its because parents don't take off coats in the car. Its actually less about their comfort, and more about convenience. I hate walking through a store with a heavy coat on, so I'm one of the adults you see walking between the car and store without a coat. EVERY day someone feels the need to tell me I need to wear a coat. Um, I have a coat, its in the car, and no, I don't need to wear it. I'm outside for less than a minute going between the car and the store. When I drop the kids off at school, I'm usually carrying their coats because they don't want to put them on for the 30 second walk from the car to the school. It would be different if they stood outside at a bus stop, but they don't.
