The SS participated in killing Jewish civilians and other civilians in many places. The Germans killed a lot of civilians outside of the camps. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Einsatzgruppen There is evidence that this man's unit was present at some of these killings in the Ukraine and he was an officer.
