Because I'm not going to ask my young adult kids to pay their own way to attend their cousin's wedding in the Caribbean, the event will cost me $5,000 to $7,000. That's for two or three hotel rooms for four nights and plane fare. It doesn't even count the wedding gift. Fortunately, we can afford this at the moment, but I hate that we're going to shell out that kind of money to go somewhere I wouldn't choose to go on my own. It's close family, though, so we would never want to miss it.
Many many weddings take place where you would never necessarily want to go on your own. That it’s a destination wedding makes no difference.
Sure, we've attended weddings in places we wouldn't want to go, but they don't generally cost us thousands of dollars.
So don’t go then. Problem solved.
DP, but skipping the wedding of a niece or nephew is unlikely to go well. I mean, if you are a close family, skipping a wedding like that isn't a viable option. You want to be there and would probably feel bad/uncomfortable/guilty if you didn't go. I personally find the whole "just skip the wedding/no one cares if you don't attend" odd. Do so many people hate their families that they honestly don't care if their aunts, uncles, cousins, or other family members don't attend?
Exactly. This is our beloved nephew. We really don't have a choice.
