What does it mean for Washington Spirit with new pro women's team in the city. Is Spirit essentially ok since other team is just getting started and has virtually no footprint in area?
It will be interesting to see it unfold. The new DC Team, DC Power FC, is part of the 1st season of a new professional women's division called USL Super League...(Yes, I just had to look this all up!) And, US Soccer granted USL S the same status as the NWSL, denoting both leagues as Top Level professional Leagues. They will even have similar minimum starting salaries of around $34k per year. While I haven't found a roster for DC Power FC, the seem to have signed a lot of decent talent (yet nobody I've ever heard of). They will also play in Audi Field, their 1st game is August 17th! I suspect we will not hear much about the new league or team as its likely their advertising budget is very little, when compared to the NWSL.... who are having great success in general team valuations over all. It might be market saturation... if they do not get off the ground financially in the first 3 years, they will likely implode or revert back into a 2nd tier status. The owners of DC Power FC are a potpourri of folks with money looking for returns, not unlike venture capitalists. It will give young players more opportunity to play professionally or to get their start, which is great. But it remains to be seen if the team/ league can get any momentum going at all. However, an interesting option for NWSL and USL S teams may exist for them to compete against one another. CONCACAF may hold a women's club cup in which both leagues would be eligible to participate.
If this new league can get any sort of traction, an eventual merger with NWSL would be a good outcome for the sport. All the major sports leagues grew this way - NFL, MLB, NBA.
