It's laughable to anyone who bikes or walks in the city that they drive safely. I guess you get off on knowing they annoy people, which is fine. A few will turn themselves to pancakes annually and hopefully they don't hurt too many pedestrians along the way.
The point is that the moped drivers don't have the ability to obliterate an entire family as does the operator of a four ton murder machine. But continue telling yourself that they do.
Murder machines! This silly rhetoric really misleads people about what is actually happening. Lets look at some official government stats, shall we? In 2022, there were: -a grand total of 17 people in Washington DC who were killed by car drivers -nearly as many deaths, 15, were blamed on bicyclist/pedestrian/scooter errors -there were 203 homicides
With all these moped drivers driving like maniacs, it's only a matter of time before the second category exceeds the first.
Would love to see the city care about traffic violations from every category of driver. Crackdowns on the fake tags would have a ripple effect driving down all kinds of crime.
We have a "broken windows" problem with traffic enforcement. People see 12 year olds on three wheelers going down the middle of Georgia Avenue. They see people on mopeds going 40 mph through stop signs. They see bicyclists ignoring every single traffic law. They see nothing happens to any of these people and then they feel like suckers for being the only ones who obey traffic laws so then they don't. Bad behavior spreads and becomes the norm.
Omg. You cannot possibly have just written that. The number of cars blowing through stop signs and red lights far FAR outweighs mopeds and bikers doing so; and the consequences are far more severe. Go sit an watch any stop sign for 20 minutes and tell me how many cars come to a full stop behind the stop line. None do. Literally zero unless there is cross traffic, and even in that case, they stop in the crosswalk. There are also certain traffic lights in my neighborhood that 1-2 cars in every cycle blow through because there is no cross traffic. every.single.time. Gtfo with your patently false statements.
This is all just nonsense. If cars ignored traffic laws like people on bikes and mopeds did, there would be accidents at every single intersection in the city, every single day.
This might be a shock to you, but as a transportation mode gets larger, faster and loses visibility, it needs more restrictions to be safe. This is why pedestrians can move around a plaza or park without restrictions while high-speed rail or airplanes need very controlled and regulated corridors. Cars are bigger, faster and with less visibility than a person/bike/moped so they need to be used in a controlled manner so as not to slam into each other or other transportation users. This is why other modes of transportation can safely operate in a way that would lead to carnage with cars. You are so used to a car based bias, that you no longer understand how other modes of transportation work.
Well, the police say only 17 deaths in the most recent year's statistics were caused by motorists, and that's in a city with a daytime population of 1 million, so the roads actually seem quite safe. Honestly, seems like we have a lot bigger problems to worry about. Maybe you should just ride the bus.
