I do date men with hsv1 but still ask for a test as it shows the range. Also I tell lets only do light kissing and if they had outbreaks. I kissed several men with hsv1 and so far so good - I'm still hsv1 negative. I think it takes more contact, saliva exchange, different viral load at the time of kissing to get this infection. 
There is also stats from NIH that people with under 10 partners won't have hsv1; if your number is over 10 you are 90% likely to have it. I'm still under 10.[/quote]

I'm still learning about hsv-1. A guy who says he had it before sex wants to date me. I'm neg. What does a "range" mean? He took an STD test but hasn't shown me the results yet. No idea why he took it because he said he bought the test to show me.[/quote]

He needs to text you the test (I usually text mine first and wait for reciprocity - some of them just disappear probably tests don't clear). 
≤0.90: Index negative, no antibody detected
0.91 - 1.09: Index equivocal, repeat testing in 4 - 6 weeks
≥1.10: Index positive, IgG antibody to HSV-I/HSV-II detected
