Mostly because the racist right couldn't get over losing the Civil War or having a black president. The dark times in the country have generally come at the hands of people who are haters on the right.

Thanksgiving is a vestige of white supremecy over the native americans.
Founding Fathers did some good things but still enabled humans to be enslaved in the name of god and freedom and liberty

the flag, again this is politicized by the right. If someone feels that there are injustices in the country and chooses to express their concern with a silent vigil, the right finds that disrespectful. Meanwhile...
