They vote 70%+ Trump/Republican out there. See what all that love for Republican policies has done for them?
When I was growing up in Cumberland, it was solid Democratic. Then the Democrats shipped all the jobs from the United States and ruined Cumberland. Cumberland also see its taxes going to Democratic bastions like Baltimore. The Democrats betrayed them, and they are voting for Republicans. Here in the DMV land of milk and honey, the Democrats are popular because they provide all the social welfare benefits so that you can have low cost labor to build houses, take care of your kids, clean your houses, cut your grass, and keep you well isolated from those who do your cut work. Of course, you want the Democrats to stay in power.
The Democrats didn’t ship all their jobs away. Free market capitalism did. I also grew up in a similar town. Industry left because the owners of the factory wanted cheap labor to work in their factories.
OMG. PP is hysterical. It was called NAFTA and it was championed by Bill Clinton. I worked on his campaign, but I never did see where the positive was for the US. Maybe he thought it would make Mexico a more stable partner and reduce immigration here?
It was negotiated under Reagan and Bush and signed under Bush. Once part of the treaty, what was Clinton supposed to do?
+1 The greatest trick the Rs did was to pull the wool over the eyes of working class white enclaves. Rs do a great job of blaming Dems for sh1t they did. NAFTA is the result of capitalism. It was the union that fought it.. you know, those groups that tend to back Dems. I keep seeing this misinformation from white Rs. They are super clueless, and the R leadership know this. I do wonder how old these people are that keep speaking this misinformation. I'm 52. My parents were blue collar workers who were impacted by their jobs moving to MX and China, during the 80s, when Rs were in power. https://www.investopedia.com/articles/economics/08/north-american-free-trade-agreement.asp
The idea of a trade agreement actually goes back to Ronald Reagan's administration. While president, Reagan made good on a campaign promise to open up trade within North America by signing the Trade and Tariff Act in 1984. Four years later, Reagan and the Canadian prime minister signed the Canada-U.S. Free Trade Agreement. NAFTA was actually negotiated by Bill Clinton's predecessor, George H.W. Bush, who decided he wanted to continue talks to open up trade with the U.S. Bush originally tried to generate an agreement between the U.S. and Mexico, but President Carlos Salinas de Gortari pushed for a trilateral deal between the three countries. After talks, Bush, Mulroney, and Salinas signed the deal in 1992, which went into effect two years later after Clinton was elected president.
