For 3rd Grade: Shepherd 14 (OOB no preference) Bernard 2 (OOB no preference) Takoma (got in OOB no preference) West 1 (OOB no preference) For PK: Truesdell (got in, IB with sibling) Bernard 80 (OOB no preference) Shepherd 47 (OOB no preference) Takoma 8 (OOB with sibling accepted) West 5 (OOB no preference) These are our numbers. Now what happens if I don't take my spot in Takoma? Cause I'd rather take Shepherd and our best number there is 14, any chance? Or even Bernard which from what I have read here on the board is very likely to get. I am exited about Bernard BUT we'd only get 2 yrs there for our oldest and then it's back to Lottery AGAIN. We're also waiting for Charters, just to make things even more difficult.
At this point, you deal with the schools one on one. If you would never go to Takoma, turn down the spot. If you would go there, sent in the intent letter now, verify residency, and wait. I think your best chance at Sepherd is to wait until late Aug/ Sept. I suspect they are a school that does not at the 3rd grade level, call every person on the wait list. It may be hard to get the PreK into Shepherd in the fall, but not so hard the 3rd grader. I would look carefully at the quality of 3rd & 4th grade teachers at Shepherd. We left a couple of years ago, because these grades were weak, don't know if there has been turnover. Good thing about Shepherd is it feeds to Deal, so you would be set for middle school, if the OOB has a right to the feeder school continues to apply.
Thank you so much for your comments! Shepherd does feed into deal and further to Wilson, so that was also part of why we'd want Shepherd. Unless all that changes of course. At this time with the numbers we have, pretty much anything could happen. I will take your suggestion and call them all one by one in order to assess our chances. If we'd get our oldest in first (she has the best numbers), at least our youngest will have sibling preference.
