Racism and bigotry are a real, ongoing problem in society and lacrosse is not some 'safe haven.' Bias is a real issue.
That being said, no way any ref is going to call a penalty on a middle school girl simply for yelling 'Got ball!' when she is on defense. And the fact that WaPo and the G family tried to highlight that incident and pass it off as a true, prime example of 'racism in the sport' is disingenuous at best. The editor should have demanded more context or removed that paragraph entirely because it just isn't credible. I'd love to see the game film of that incident.  Would it show a 'racist ref' taking out bias on an innocent kid communicating with her teammates the way her coaches taught her?  Or, more likely, did the young lady in question do something else that led to the penalty? WaPo's attempt to gloss over the details of that incident undercut the credibility of other parts of the story. But it doesn't mean the entire premise is false. I accept what others in this forum pointed out: white kids on teams have the exact same experiences of being told to play D if they are fast, or don't get passed to by certain players on a cliquey team.
Still, it is SAD that this young woman is the only Black player on the U-16 team and that just shows USA Lacrosse has a ways to go to get kids interested in the sport.
30% of MD is Black. 50% of DC is Black. Most local youth lacrosse rosters don't come close to reflecting that. The lacrosse community should be doing more to be inclusive. It would benefit the kids, the sport, and the community.[/quote]
There are lots of things white supremacists do that are absurd and hard to believe.  I have been around long enough to know these things happen.  I believe what the girl says happened and worse has probably happened where she was probably too busy being a kid to notice.  [/quote]
