Racism and bigotry are a real, ongoing problem in society and lacrosse is not some 'safe haven.' Bias is a real issue.
That being said, no way any ref is going to call a penalty on a middle school girl simply for yelling 'Got ball!' when she is on defense. And the fact that WaPo and the G family tried to highlight that incident and pass it off as a true, prime example of 'racism in the sport' is disingenuous at best. The editor should have demanded more context or removed that paragraph entirely because it just isn't credible. I'd love to see the game film of that incident. Would it show a 'racist ref' taking out bias on an innocent kid communicating with her teammates the way her coaches taught her? Or, more likely, did the young lady in question do something else that led to the penalty? WaPo's attempt to gloss over the details of that incident undercut the credibility of other parts of the story. But it doesn't mean the entire premise is false. I accept what others in this forum pointed out: white kids on teams have the exact same experiences of being told to play D if they are fast, or don't get passed to by certain players on a cliquey team.
Still, it is SAD that this young woman is the only Black player on the U-16 team and that just shows USA Lacrosse has a ways to go to get kids interested in the sport.
30% of MD is Black. 50% of DC is Black. Most local youth lacrosse rosters don't come close to reflecting that. The lacrosse community should be doing more to be inclusive. It would benefit the kids, the sport, and the community.
There are lots of things white supremacists do that are absurd and hard to believe. I have been around long enough to know these things happen. I believe what the girl says happened and worse has probably happened where she was probably too busy being a kid to notice.
Did it occur to you that reflexively calling everybody a racist and white supremacist actually hurts your cause?
Who says everyone is a white supremacist. However, if someone’s behavior is consistent with white supremacist behavior, I think it’s fair to suspect thy may be a white supremacist. And when someone sees white supremacy and they turn a blind eye to it, that’s a soft way to supporting white supremacy.
Can we agree that the person who wrote the post beginning "maybe we can stop name calling" has not said or done anything to justify being called a racist or white supremacist, and that calling him/her a name like that would be wrong?

Wow, this is crazy, black family moves into white neighborhood and is shocked by lack of racism.
Interesting, same family…you guys connecting the dots yet?

For the racism to stop. People need to stop being racist. That’s the simple solution.
And how do you measure that?

Well, if the bar for racism is a minority to not play their preferred position, or not have bad calls from a ref against them, I hate to break it to you, but that's not ever going to happen.
Prob doesn't help to have someone say "We can take over the sport", either.
What’s wrong with the girl being confident enough to say she can take over? Any kid should be given an equal chance to play the position they prefer and no player should have calls against them because them and be penalized for the sole reason of being Black. Where in the rules is it a violation to say “I got ball”? Maybe it was a coincidence, but if the white players saying similar phrases weren’t penalized, I would also assume it was racism also.
Making all these excuses and trying to pretend the racism isn’t there doesn’t work. I’d have more respect for you if you just admitted that you are comfortable being racist and don’t continue to stop, than making up all this BS and swearing the racism doesn’t exist.
She didn't say "she can takeover" she said "we can takeover". She is saying white players aren't good enough to compete with black players, and it was bluntly.
"Any kid should be given an equal chance to play the position they prefer", the coach decides who plays where, and how much for the good of the team, seems like you never played sports if you think players deciding position is okay.
" Where in the rules is it a violation to say “I got ball”?" Its such an absurd thing to say, no one in right mind would call a card on that, was there also a cross check at same time? I'd love to hear what coach thinks cause if Im her coach and she got a red card for saying I got Ball, I'd be getting thrown out of the game.
For sake of argument, if there is some KKK Ref out there, why not just call a Red on a play that had legit contact? I mean the accusation is just absurd.
Your interpretation of her quoted statement shows your racism and it’s clear.
What is your non racist interpretation of that quote?
Now, before you reply, reverse the races and see if you hold the same opinion.
