I went to that kind of church in my early 20s until I realized I couldn't accept their teachings any more. I spent my 20s getting to know "non church" folks and marveling at how loving they were. DH and I were the token straight couple in a fun group of gay couples for a while.

When we had kids in our 30s, I wanted to go back to church . . . a church that would accept everyone. I chose a PC(USA) church that performs gay weddings (this was prior to the law being changed . . . on the day VA legalized gay marriage, our pastor went down to the courthouse steps to marry anyone who asked).

Recently my 9 year old asked me if it's possible to be gay then straight then gay again. I said, well, I think when you go to a church that teaches that being gay is a sin, you might think you have changed from gay to straight, when really you are just trying to fit in with your church; that's why I picked a church for us that would never reject anyone.

I know there's a loss in losing a church home. You've made a commitment to something bigger than yourself. But you can't have your cake and eat it too -- you can't tell your child that you accept them unconditionally while you remain committed to a church body that doesn't. [/quote]
