This is going to end with Manchin and Sinema being forced to nuke the filibuster, possibly after a 30% drop in the Dow.
Won't happen. Democrats won't let the US default. They'll raise the debt ceiling by themselves. They're the party in power and will get the blame.
I honestly think it would be better for Dems to eliminate the filibuster for the debt ceiling and all budget bills. It would make the idea of only being able to use reconciliation twice a year obsolete. Whatever party is in power can pass whatever financials they want. Yes, maybe spending will flow more freely, but there will also be a clearer political responsibility for who spent that money and what the effect was on the economy and people’s lives. The last 20 years have been dysfunctional financially - budget bills don’t get passed, we constantly have these damaging debt ceiling fights and government shut downs. I say gut the filibuster for budget and debt ceiling bills.
You can't unring spending and entitlements. That's what the Democrats are banking on. A permanent class of voters who they can scare into voting Democrat by claiming the GOP will take away those entitlements. The whole push grandma off the cliff.
Social programs are unrung consistently or at least retuned to the right as soon as Republicans are in charge. Follow the money. Most of the funds have been routed to states and red state Governors launder all the federal benefits through their cronies and Republican patronage network. Read the recent WaPo article about rental assistance in Mississippi. The law firm with the no bid contract is taking all the money to review/sit on applications that never get approved while the renters are evicted. Medicaid in red states has turned into a windfall for nursing home owners and investors. Housing programs are subsidies, financing, and tax breaks for connected developers. Even disaster programs are diverted away from the disaster victims. Texas sent the federal disaster mitigation money to all the white suburban and exurban counties around Houston but none to the city. Meanwhile, the irresponsible bells that can’t be unrung are the tax cuts. “Moderate” Democrats are always chickenshit to rescind Republican tax cuts.
