This is going to end with Manchin and Sinema being forced to nuke the filibuster, possibly after a 30% drop in the Dow.
Won't happen. Democrats won't let the US default. They'll raise the debt ceiling by themselves. They're the party in power and will get the blame.
I honestly think it would be better for Dems to eliminate the filibuster for the debt ceiling and all budget bills. It would make the idea of only being able to use reconciliation twice a year obsolete. Whatever party is in power can pass whatever financials they want. Yes, maybe spending will flow more freely, but there will also be a clearer political responsibility for who spent that money and what the effect was on the economy and people’s lives. The last 20 years have been dysfunctional financially - budget bills don’t get passed, we constantly have these damaging debt ceiling fights and government shut downs. I say gut the filibuster for budget and debt ceiling bills.
You can't unring spending and entitlements. That's what the Democrats are banking on. A permanent class of voters who they can scare into voting Democrat by claiming the GOP will take away those entitlements. The whole push grandma off the cliff.
