There plan is working. Overcrowding will work itself out, the old ways of people leaving for Fairfax etc are returning. That said, the people who stay in APS will likely be higher need demographics, so a middle of the road student will be on their own. https://www.arlnow.com/2021/05/05/lower-enrollment-could-help-bail-aps-out-of-11m-deficit/
5 years from now when enrollment is exploding due to the return of normal school and increased housing in the county (including all those high rises with 2-3 bedroom units that aren't supposed to have kids) we will look back at this and say how stupid it was that we didn't predict the students would come back.
Exactly. Groundhog Day. They continually denied the enrollment increases for years, landing us in the capacity crisis they continually avoid solving. Now they're happy and relieved enrollment is down and think they don't need to do anything. Instead of planning and preparing for future growth, they're trying to find a way to not cut class sizes and to give every teacher a raise. Then they'll scream budget woes again when they need more seats.
They were shocked! when so many people selected in person for next year. Now they are shocked! that supposedly 2,000 students that left APS this year won't be returning. Next they will be shocked! in August when enrollment numbers jump right back up again (assuming they actually provide 5 days of real school next year). They are so, so incompetent. And now they will plan to rely on virtual school to solve capacity issues, except - shocking! - people don't really want it.
