Montessori moves into CC building. Patrick Henry torn down
So, are they renovating the CC or Montessori gets it as-is? Didn’t they just spend a couple million to freshen up the other building that will now be torn down? And like 10 million to take over the second level of the CC? Will it work like this: build new building for Arlington Tech and CC, then they move to the new building and Montessori takes over the CC and Henry is torn down? And are they still planning for 1,000 plus HS seats here?
I thought there were technical classrooms in the CC that would be extremely expensive to rebuild and that's what they were developing the building out from where it was. Will those classes remain in the CC building and Montessori gets the rest? I think spending money on high school seats at Arlington Tech makes sense. I really don't think we should be spending more money on the Montessori option program. Option program builds have taken up way too much of APS's construction budget in recent years. We need to build neighborhood seats. The HB Woodlawn construction was a disaster. Has the CIP proposal been released today? I'm wondering where they are going to put new middle school seats - an annex at Kenmore perhaps? (only necessary because they chose to save a small amount of money by not building Hamm out to 1300 seats, which would have been so much easier and cheaper).
I think the subtext is that Montessori MS seats will move to the CC site. I suspect Immersion MS seats will be moved, too, probably to the ATS site, in the future. Not a ton of MS seats, but frees up a little space at Gunston for neighborhood seats.
How many students are in the MS immersion program? I think the Montessori MS program is pretty small (but perhaps they expect it to grow). I sort of expect that Carlin Springs will become the second immersion ES site and an addition will be built at Kenmore to accommodate the immersion MS program and hopefully other new seats. The point is, Montessori has a building. APS can't afford to build out new spaces for programs that already have buildings. It was one thing when the CC site was going to be a 4th high school and the whole site needed to be redeveloped, but that's off the table now right? Are we just talking about the 800 Arl Tech seats?
