Biden has been saying that he's won more votes than Sanders to date and he's correct.  Here are the current standings after 4 contests:

South Carolina (256111, 39, 105226, 13)

Total:  Biden (325737, 54), Sanders (260814, 58)

Just like the electoral college, the delegate counts favor smaller states and give more weight to smaller populations.  Sanders is currently leading by winning smaller states.  Sanders is not really that popular.  And I expect that Biden will continue to outpace him in actual votes.  However, Sanders is currently stronger in delegate totals and it seems like he will stay that way after Super Tuesday.  As the Biden camps puts it, their goal is to be close enough to Sanders to be competitive and to distance themselves from any other candidates and try to make it into a 2 horse race to really narrow the field down to moderate vs progressive and try to win the post-Super Tuesday races in the narrower field.[/quote]
