A few months ago a person also made these claims about our school system. This got a lot of people worked up into a real tizzy, but when pressed they were unable to find a single shred of evidence to support this. There were 0 gang-related incidents in our school system going back several years. In fact, all they could do is post articles from Breitbart and other extremist sources claiming there was a national crisis. Not a single incident in our jurisdiction. It was fear mongering plain and simple.
I don't know what school system you are in, but the Post has been doing great journalism on this phenomenon. Both the linked article and one about two months ago about Langley Park. I'm pro-immigrant and pro-DACA, which is why I refuse to pretend gangs aren't a problem. My kids may not be at risk, but I care about the thousands of immigrant kids in our area who are, due to their neighborhood or having family in Central America.
Which neighborhoods and which schools? It's an issue, but WHERE?
Jesus Christ she just gave you another example. Guessing you don’t live in Langley Park so you don’t care about that neighborhood.
So Langley Park and Fairfax HS. We're up to two now...
Don’t worry you’re probably pretty safe in Potomac!
This is what drives me insane about these discussions. It's always the ones who are wealthy enough to shutter themselves off in affluent, primarily homogeneous enclaves trying to tell the rest of us that WE'RE the racists, fear mongerers, etc. for being concerned about gangs, violence, etc. in the local schools.
I’m the PP calling out the fear mongering and anti-immigrant propaganda. I live in a diverse area and I have no doubt there is a MS-13 presence at our local HS. It needs to be addressed. BUT you don’t do that by lying to get the fearful immigrant-haters spun up. Either present some facts/data or STFU.
If you have no doubt there is an MS-13 presence at your local HS, then why are you demanding data to prove it for other people? I have kids in HS. I get word of mouth information from my own children and their friends. The gang members don't hide it - most of the kids know.
So you know a little bit about your schools. And therefore you can generalize about EVERY school in the area?
If there is a presence at your neighborhood school, and it's at mine, and many others have said it's at theirs, and it's at every FCPS and MCPS school that I have friends or family whose kids attend....then it just might be an actual problem. Here is a story about the specific murder I spoke about earlier. The murderer went to Fairfax HS and killed a student from Centreville HS. They say they don't know if it's gang-related yet, but my child knows of this boy and he talked about being in MS-13. Everyone knew it. He also has an ICE detainer on him. It's easy to figure out, based on how spun up you and others get at the thought of it, why they are so hesitant to call it what it is. http://www.fairfaxtimes.com/articles/fairfax-man-charged-with-murder/article_53c04878-2706-11e8-a4d4-37d0b31dd1ca.html
