That protest was about corporate influence, the banking industry, and income inequality; the US economy was a tangential issue, not the main one. Take a look at the summary from Wikipedia:

"The original protest was initiated by Kalle Lasn and Micah White of Adbusters, a Canadian anti-consumerist publication, who conceived of a September 17 occupation in Lower Manhattan.
