Everyone would do better at communication if they learned about the ladder of abstraction. Google it!
This isnt the issue. The issue us that age guy wants older players to play down against younger ones. When you add grade to US Soccers eligibility matrix it makes it impossible for him to try and sneak in playing down. Even more of an issue to age guys play down agenda is if Aug birthdays play on their correct grade in school team. This is because when Aug birthdays play on their correct grade in school team everyone on the field is the same graduating year. (except holdbacks) Which ultimately is what college coaches want when recruiting/scouting players.
And by forcing kids to play up, you ALSO disadvantage MOST of them (a few will rise anyway). So, all you are is asking for special treatment for kids who remain playing on age.
This disadvantagimg them cuts their chances by playing in college by probably about half while doubling their chances of quitting. ECNL Guy has got it figured out. Stinks to be a June or July birth in soccer now not August.
Right ... savvy parents of aug bdays should take advantage of the rules. If they buy completely into what Aug grade guy says, they're only hurt their chances.
Thats the rub. There might be a physical advantage to playing on a grade down when players are young. But every year you dont move up it gets more and more difficult to move up. Also the older kids get the more likely they are to start calling an Aug birthday playing down "Uncle/Aunt" then whatever their name is to make fun of them. In the end its just better to start playing on the corrct grade in school team from the beginning.
Completely false. Easier to go up an age group as they get older, especially after puberty. Differences in age groups lessens over time. And unnecessary to switch because college coaches said they don't care what age group you are in and ECNL Guy pointed out that you can get twice the showcases playing on age. Why do you care so much about misleading Aug births only? Targeting much.
Not true, rosters for top teams are set at an early age everyone knows this.
The real answer is what's best is going to totally depend on the kid. But if I had an August kid, at ~U8 when my kid goes to club, I would evaluate whether my kid is there with a sole priority to become their best, or to also play with friends. If they are already good enough to make the A team with their grade, I'm going there right away. If the choice is B team on grade, or A team below, I'm looking at the friend factor. At this age, the kid is still deciding whether he/she is having fun with the sport. No friends on either team, I'm having them go down to A for better development. A teams have more serious peers, get treated more seriously by the club, and will give my kid confidence. After this entry to club, I'd be looking every single year to whether my kid is ready to move from lower grade A team to on-grade A team. When he/she is ready, move up. If he/she isn't ready to move up by high school, I'd just move up to the B team to be with friends, and admit that he/she is unlikely to ever make the jump. At that point, there's probably a good chance of being moved down to B team with grade below anyway, which would be super silly. On-grade A team roster is likely hard to break into later, set early, but it's going to be easier coming from the lower grade A team than from on-grade B team, because the coaches have a stigma in their head against B team kids. At U8-U9, the difference between being youngest and oldest in the group is going to decide A/B team in 90% of cases. It's comical how much difference it makes at that very first tryout.
