some possibilities:
1. He's fat
2. He has "no job"
3. Recently on camera, he has confronted Amber about being a shitty mom and talked about her negatively during the sit-down segments
4. In the 16&Pregnant and early seasons of Teen Mom, he had a bit of a dumb/lazy/clueless edit.  I think Kristina has been really good for him, as well as just maturing.  In 16&P for example, he took their savings and bought a $500 XBox bundle.  He's also been edited as kind of all talk, promising the world but only coming up with a Walmart ring.  I think in the early years, Amber felt like the burden of caring for Leah fell completely on her and Gary didn't really step up.  Of course, that didn't mean she actually did the caring for Leah, and Leah spent a lot of time--on camera--crying in her crib.  But I think Gary is really about the best you can find in Anderson, Indiana, and he and Kristina have made a lovely little family.
