This list is *very* heavily UC weighted. I find this very hard to believe. Over Yale, Penn, Brown, Cornell, etc. Has Silicon Valley pushed up the competitiveness of the UC schools that much?
Yes. One thing in common for Yale, Penn Brown etc. are they are relatively weak in engineering/technology/computer science (maybe not so much in pure sciences). One reason Stanford has gained so much and is (sometimes) considered to be the best university over Harvard since Harvard is week in engineering/technology/computer science. Technology/engineering will play even more of a role for the future universities.
UC Berkeley was ranked around 8th or 9th in the domestic USNW college rankings when they originally began ranking universities in the 80s. The change in methodology and/or weight (especially on endowment, alumni giving etc.) favors private universities so UC Berkeley's ranking fell somewhat for the domestic ranking over the years. Global ones I think gives less weight to endowment size, alumni contributions etc.
