Surprising to me that anyone in high school who at least has a superficial knowledge of Straussians isn't able to aim higher than a mediocre liberal arts college. Troll?
Not a troll. I was very active on DCUM for a while, then took a break a few months ago. I have a passion for politics.(it'd be fair to call me a political wonk) While I am on the Far-Right politically, I've read various political philosophers. I love studying political philosophy, and exploring ideas. Academically, I've been told that I'm very bright, but also pretty lazy. At my best I can be an elite student, but I don't put in a ton of effort, so my stats are slightly above average. I get pretty average quarter grades, but my midterm and final exam grades are very high. Dr. Charles Murray (a man I have great respect for) often says that ability and desire are the two most important things for a student. I've got the ability, but very little desire. I'm bored in math and science courses. I just need to work on my motivation and work ethic. Question for you. In what world is Sewanee "mediocre?" Either you're a typical DCUM snob (who thinks that anything other than the NESCAC schools is mediocre) or your knowledge of the college landscape is dated. Sewanee was once mediocre, but their acceptance rate has really decreased over the past few years. I should be fine with getting in because I'm applying ED, and because I'm a full-pay student. It's got small classes, a prep-school feel, and a very nice campus. Putting rankings to the side for a moment, I don't see how places like Colby, Bates, Trinity, or Wesleyan are really that much better than a place like Sewanee.
It's a solid school. And with the exception of Wesleyan, you're right--not much difference.
