There are 2 tastefully illustrated American Girl books that are terrific. One is a bit more advanced than the other. My 10 YO preferred the more junior one but still keeps both for reference.
The Care and Keeping of You, which is probably one of the books this PP is referring to, is AWFUL. Highly recommend against it. Very alarmist and insinuates girls should feel awkward and embarrassed to talk to close adults about body changes. I bought it, read it, and returned it without even showing my daughter.
I agree with you, PP. This book is also very limited in scope, largely due to the company's Christian/conservative focus. Any book worth its salt should dare to mention taboo topics that far too many uptight DCUM moms would never dare mention to their daughters. Topics like the role of the clitoris and the pleasures of masturbation, etc.
