You can try a different brand that doesn't have thickeners in the ingredients list, or try a different kind of nut milk. None of them are as tasty as actual milk so if that's your quest, give it up. I would be drinking real milk if I could.
I am lactose intolerant and have tried all the "milks". Almond milk is definitely superior. Your are correct that they are probably adding a thickener, because almond milk is actually usually quite runny. The best almond milk is "Pacific" brand from Whole Foods (you could also get it at the TPSS Co-Op), you definitely need to get it "original" without any added sweetener or vanilla flavoring, to really enjoy it.

I hate milk/ never drink it/ only ever use it in cooking, and almond milk works just as well in my recipes that call for cow milk. And I would hate to contribute to the abuse of dairy cows- they suffer and live horrible lives until they are killed.
The downside of almond milk is how wasteful it is. Each almond requires some gawdawful amount of water to produce and most almonds come from drought stricken California.

I'm not sure the point is to get almonds out of almond milk. You can always just eat almonds if that's the goal. You can look up the recipe for homemade almond milk and you'll see it is just the water from raw almonds that are soaked for a long time. It's white and milky and works as a milk replacement. That's pretty much the goal of almond milk.
