What's the best way to handle 12 hour over night shifts? I have 4/week coming up for 6 months. Is it best to them consecutively? So m-thu or every other day? Tips for sleeping patterns? Staying awake? Keeping sane?
I often work 12 hour night shifts at the hospital (and regularly worked 30+ as a resident). This is how I maximize daylight hours in order to spend time with my kids and get stuff done. First off, do the four shifts in a row otherwise you will never get a full "day off." Monday - wake up at regular time, take 2-3 hr nap in afternoon. Go to work at night. Tuesday - come home, take kids to school, back home to sleep, wake up around 3:30-4 and pick up, feed dinner, etc. then back to work. Wed/thurs - repeat Friday - come home in the morning. Stay up until after lunch and take a 2-3 hr nap in the afternoon. Sleep at regular time. Sat/sun - back to normal daytime schedule.
