This happened to me in graduate school – twice. I mean, covered from head to foot. Nothing new I had eaten or tried. Sometimes you can have a reaction to something only if a "trigger" is present – you may only react to hot peppers if you are also under high stress, for example. So sometimes it has to be two things going on at once for a reaction to happen. When I first went in, they gave me Chlor-Trimeton, which did nothing. They then put me on prednisone (steroid) for three weeks, and I had to taper off of it very slowly. Even when I went off of it slowly I felt like I got hit by a truck, so be careful. After that, once I had two episodes of this, the doctor gave me Allegra to carry around and to take a pill at the first sign of hives. Often, I would feel tingly or itchy in a spot and before I fully erupted in hives, if I took an Allegra, it would head off the reaction. I did that once or twice and then I never had them again. I hope you feel better soon!
