Allergic to Texas? I know I am.

I once got hives from touching a new shower curtain that had been treated with some kind of mildew inhibitor. The other time I got hives was from developing a mild allergy to amoxicillin, after decades of having used it with no issues.

It might be the cold. Some people are actually allergic to extreme cold.

Zyrtec is the only other antihistamine that will help with hives and it will not make you nearly as drowsy as Benadryl will. I had to take Zyrtec for 2 months before my hives finally went away. The doctor said that most of the time they have no idea why some people get them but they usually fade after 8-10 (long) weeks. I would take Zyrtec every day and slather my body in Benadryl gel twice a day. I even put the gel around my eyes even though you're not supposed to do that. It helped keep the hives from taking over my life. Eventually, they just gradually became less and less until I finally was able to stop taking the Zyrtec.

For me it wasn't the seafood but the seasoning.

The last time I had hives (allergic reaction to antibiotics), the doctor put me on Zyrtec specifically to help them go away faster. It was Rx back then but I think it's OTC now. You could try it.

Benadryl didn't help. Knocked me out completely for 12 hours then woke up looking even worse.

This has happened to be twice. The first time I never figured out why. The second time I was dealing with a stressful renovation. They went away after a week or so on just benadryl, but it sounds like yours may be worse than mine.

I get hives from certain drugs. I often request prednisone for the hives because it will make them go away faster than with benadryl alone, but at least in my experience prednisone isnt exactly pleasant - my skin gets very sensitive and I have trouble sleeping. Point being, if you can just do the benadryl and stick out the look of the hives for the next few days, that would be my personal preference.

This happened to me in graduate school – twice. I mean, covered from head to foot. Nothing new I had eaten or tried. Sometimes you can have a reaction to something only if a "trigger" is present – you may only react to hot peppers if you are also under high stress, for example. So sometimes it has to be two things going on at once for a reaction to happen.

When I first went in, they gave me Chlor-Trimeton, which did nothing. They then put me on prednisone (steroid) for three weeks, and I had to taper off of it very slowly. Even when I went off of it slowly I felt like I got hit by a truck, so be careful.

After that, once I had two episodes of this, the doctor gave me Allegra to carry around and to take a pill at the first sign of hives. Often, I would feel tingly or itchy in a spot and before I fully erupted in hives, if I took an Allegra, it would head off the reaction. I did that once or twice and then I never had them again.

I hope you feel better soon!

Take pictures and go to dr or er. You need benedryl, steroids and maybe a drip. Good luck!

If you go to the doctor they can put you on steroids which will stop the reaction. Do this if it persists for longer than 24 hours. You don't want it to turn into a respiratory thing.

From my scalp to my feet - I am completely covered. I don't know what I ate or what I touched - nothing in my routine is different! Any theories? I don't want to go to the doc as they'll just tell me I ate something or touched something. I'm taking Benadryl, but it's not really helping.
