It's not the machine - I bought some preground Starbucks espresso roast and it was fine - but I prefer to grind my own.

So then it must be the grind - experiment with grinding it coarser or finer. I wouldn't use Starbucks for anything (that is not meant to sound snarky, but.. yuck). Have you tried any of the Compass coffees? We really like them and are currently using the Shaw blend in our espresso machine and in our aeropress. [/quote]

You can snark, we don't use Starbucks, but I was there and we were out, so....

I haven't tried Compass, I was using Intelligentsia Black Cat for a long time, but ran out and just forgot.  Compass, mmmmm - but I don't live in DC anymore.
