So then it must be the grind - experiment with grinding it coarser or finer. I wouldn't use Starbucks for anything (that is not meant to sound snarky, but.. yuck). Have you tried any of the Compass coffees? We really like them and are currently using the Shaw blend in our espresso machine and in our aeropress.
You can snark, we don't use Starbucks, but I was there and we were out, so....
I haven't tried Compass, I was using Intelligentsia Black Cat for a long time, but ran out and just forgot. Compass, mmmmm - but I don't live in DC anymore.

Sorry - when I said one grinder, I should have said it's a burr grinder you fill up and then grind just what you need.

Yes, I grind fine for espresso and coarser for drip. The drip coffee tastes fine but my lattes taste like....coffee in steamed milk.

If you use Illy ground its actually a lot finer, the grind, so that will work better.

It's not just the roast, it's the grind. Does your grinder have more than one setting? If not, I'd get a new grinder or resign myself to pregrinding the coffee for espresso elsewhere.

The Starbucks dark roast sold at Costco is our all purpose coffee for both regular and espresso.

I buy some of the darker roast Starbucks whole beans and use them for both the espresso machine and drip coffee-maker. Our drip coffee maker grinds them and I have a separate grinder that I use for the espresso machine.

I need some suggestions. I find that unless it's espresso roast, it takes awful as espresso, and my husband insists you can't use espresso roast in a drip coffee maker. We prefer freshly ground and only have one grinder, so I' like to find a coffee that I can use with both machines.
