Just my two cents, so take it for what it's worth... That is a very bold rug in a very bold color. Since that is your first choice for furnishing your room, it appears that you want to make it a focal point. If your family can live with it (i.e., no kids) I would buy a white couch to anchor the room. Then you need to decide which style direction you want to go in. I can see several options - Art Deco (my personal choice), mid century modern (I don't like it, but many people do), sixties 'mod' (which I despise, but some people love), casual eclectic, and super modern. First option, Art Deco - lots of sleek silver and mirrors, with a glam 'decoish' look. Mid century modern - walnut or similar wood furniture, slingback chairs, boomerang shapes, etc. Sixties - simple lines, bright orange and brown accents, pops of bold color. Casual modern - comfortable furniture in a mix of styles with coral accents. Super modern - stark, minimalist lines and neutral colors. You really need to focus in first on a particular style (or 'feel' or color scheme,....) to get the best advice. It really comes down to what you like and what will make you happy.
Thanks, these are helpful thoughts! I think I lean towards the modern/comfortable eclectic. Any recommendations based on that? Would a comfortable sofa in a "stone" color (very light gray, but not quite white because KIDS!) work? I do like color a lot (which I guess is obvious!) so I like the idea of pulling in corals or similar shades. Thanks.
