We're in Europe for work. Here it is very uncommon to have a contract; all iphones are sold unlocked, and everyone uses a top-up SIM card. So it varies. I pay something like $10 a month, and that's because I mostly just use my phone for internet, texting, and calling taxis. I think this is a better system than what I used have in the US with a contract. My "local" friends here are shocked when I tell them that iphones are sold pre-contracted in the US, and then I tell them how much people pay.
Definitely. But there you have to buy the phone outright so you pay the $600 out of pocket for the smart phone. Granted then you can use it forever on the cheaper plan. It does end up being cheaper by a lot in Europe. More competition and the SIM cards make it easier too. We are stuck with the big monopolies in the U.S. Consumers in the U.S. Have an easier time swallowing the "free" upgrade but $100 a month plan as opposed to a $600 up front and then he cheaper plan. Just the way it's been for a whole. Now comPanties here are eliminating the contracts but they offer you the installment and upgrade after a certain time plan. So it's not really any cheaper.
