My father is in a CCRC out of state (run by Erickson - I see their vans around here so perhaps they also have facilities in this area.) Clearly they are trying to market to that demographic - "active" seniors as opposed to those who are really already needing a lot more care. The place he is in has tons of activities, including its own movie theatre and TV station. He bought an apartment and paid a monthly fee (included meals at the multiple restaurants on site) - after you leave the apartment, some percentage of the apartment's value goes toward care in the system or toward the estate. I don't really understand all those details.

One thing we didn't fully appreciate was that they didn't have a real "assisted living" level of care - when he started to decline (mild/moderate Alzheimers) we simply had to arrange private caregivers, either through the facility or on our own. The caregivers were fine, but he really needed more supervision. They had a 4-hr/day program for memory care which helped some. We were debating what to do when he had a serious medical incident, and now needs real nursing care. He is in the memory care unit of his facility. It's crazy expensive ($9k per month) but he is very happy and really well cared for.

BTW I'd advise against calling A Place for Mom. I called after seeing their ads on TV, and they literally telemarketed me for months afterward, every single day. [/quote]
