Vinson Hall takes retired civil service employees at a certain level as our friends are on their waiting list and he was at top of GS scale and in navy for a while,but never in the branches of government you mentioned. I also know of a couple who moved into Goodwin House and find it to be a wonderful place in their late 70s.

My folks have been at a place called New Pond Village in MA for a year (93) and have a beautiful 2-bedroom unit with wraparound porch in independent living. True they bought
the unit, but resale will be easy and for two of them with one meal is about $4,500/month. You might look it up to see which company runs it to see if they have other communities in the area.

Depending on what type of arrangement you need, they've been known to bend that rule if they have space available. It's worth a call.

There are a few old threads on this. I briefly looked at a couple of places affiliated with Sunrise; I drive by a Sunrise place on Conn Ave every day.

My father is in a CCRC out of state (run by Erickson - I see their vans around here so perhaps they also have facilities in this area.) It's been a godsend, and I just wish we got him there earlier, when he could have enjoyed the social activities and outings more. Clearly they are trying to market to that demographic - "active" seniors as opposed to those who are really already needing a lot more care. The place he is in has tons of activities, including its own movie theatre and TV station. He bought an apartment and paid a monthly fee (included meals at the multiple restaurants on site) - after you leave the apartment, some percentage of the apartment's value goes toward care in the system or toward the estate. I don't really understand all those details.

One thing we didn't fully appreciate was that they didn't have a real "assisted living" level of care - when he started to decline (mild/moderate Alzheimers) we simply had to arrange private caregivers, either through the facility or on our own. The caregivers were fine, but he really needed more supervision. They had a 4-hr/day program for memory care which helped some. We were debating what to do when he had a serious medical incident, and now needs real nursing care. He is in the memory care unit of his facility. It's crazy expensive ($9k per month) but he is very happy and really well cared for.

BTW I'd advise against calling A Place for Mom. I called after seeing their ads on TV, and they literally telemarketed me for months afterward, every single day.

Are you looking for a facility with an Alzheimers or Memory Care program included in the facility? And do they have Long term care insurance?

I have a friend going through this right now. They just put their mom in a local facility to the tune of $6K per month, thankfully she has LTC insurance otherwise all of her assets would be wiped out.
